Chemistry:Overview of the elements
Groups:
- Group 1: Alkali metals (a.k.a. sodium family)
with 1 electron in each atom's outer shell. Very active similar metals.
- Group 2: Alkaline earth metals (a.k.a. calcium
family). These elements have 2 electrons in each atom's outer shell.
- Group 3: Nonmetallic through metallic elements
with stable inner shells. 3 electrons in each atom's outer shell.
- Group 4: Nonmetallic through metallic elements
with stable inner shells. 4 electrons in each atom's outer shell.
- Group 5: Nitrogen Family. Nonmetallic through
partially metallic elements with stable inner shell. 5 electrons in atom's
outer shell.
- Group 6: Oxygen Family. Nonmetallic through metallic
with stable inner shells. There are 6 electrons in each atom's outer shell.
- Group 7: Halogen Family. Active nonmetals with
stable inner shells. 7 electrons in each atom's outer shell.
- Group 8: Inert (a.k.a. noble) gases that do not
combine with any other element. 8 electrons in each atom's outer shell
(except for helium (2).
